What would happen if you tried to dig a hole to the other side of the Earth?

  1. Arianna says:

Scientifically, you wouldn’t be able to dig a hole through the earth completely. You would be able to dig some meters down, but after awhile you will meet the core of the earth, which is lava and hot coals (I believe) and mercilessly burn from the lava. Yes, it may seem dark, but there is no way you will make a hole completely through the earth alive.

    • david says:

And in theory, the Earth would explode.

    • Arianna says:

I claim that you will burn if you try to dig completely through the earth. My evidence is the Mantle layer and the Outer Core can get over 4,200 degrees Fahrenheit or 4,200F, the Mantle layer is to far down to manually dig and the temperature in the Mantle and Outer Core are hot enough to second and third degree burns or give you a heat stroke, if you live.

  2. trey says:

If you tried to dig all the way through the earth you would burn up.
First, you would have to go through all that magma and you would need a metal machine with a very high melting point in order to not melt when digging.
Second, it would take so long to dig down that you would need lots of food and water.
Also when you got down to the magma it would bury you alive.

    • trey says:

I claim that you would burn up before you made it to the center of the earth because of the heat and distance. My evidence is that the crust can be up to 35 miles thick and is made of hot rock and soil. If you did make it passed the crust you would hit 4532 degree fahrenheit solid rock that would last 1800 miles. Those temperatures would melt pretty much any machine and you would burn up instantly.

  3. Megan says:

Well it kind of depends on what materials you have to dig a hole to the other side of the earth, but if it was just a person doing it they would not make it without reaching magma and die. If though it was with machine and person, then need a whole lot of materials that would be really expensive. Though it would be possible if we had all of the dimond in the world and heat proof suits that could block out the heat of magma.

    • Megan says:

I claim that you need a whole lot of machinery that is really expensive, machinery and the could burn up and you could die. My evidence is that the mantle is 680oF-4532oF the outer core is 3500oF-4300oF, and the inner core is 10,000oF. You could easily die if digging to the other side of the earth.

  4. Olivia says:

I think if you were to dig a hole all the around the earth you may get stuck at some point. Because there could be hard ground you couldn’t dig through, or you could get stuck somewhere under the ground. Or maybe as you get to the center of the earth something weird or wild may happen.

    • Olivia says:

I claim that you can not dig your way to the other side of the earth. You may die. My evidence is how hot the temperatures get, in the Mantle the temperature is between 680+5432 degrees. In the Outer core the temperatures get to about 3500-4300 degrees, in the inner core the temperatures gets to as high as 10000 degrees. And in the crust the temperature usually varies, the further down you go the further it increases. You would also not be able to dig around the earth because there are long thick miles of dense layer rock, and if you were to dig through that it could collapse. One other evidence i have is that everything is mostly made out of solid rock, if you were to try digging through that your equipment may break.

  5. david says:

You will die because of the magma underneath the ground. If you could go farther you would reach the outer core of the Earth, then you would die there. If you could go farther, you would reach the inner core. If you dug farther, the earth would explode, in theory of course.

  6. adrianna says:

You wouldnt be able to go through all the layers but maybe some. You have to go through so much of all of the earths layers such as the crust, mantle, and the core (inside and out), etc. There is also magma consisted in the earth so it would be nearly impossible to go through it without dying (maybe).

    • adrianna says:

I claim that you wouldn’t be able to dig through the Earth to the other side, because your machinery would melt and you would die.My evidence is that you can for sure make it through the Crust because its basically just brittle rock and soil, but the temperature varies. You possibly would make it through the Mantle, but its solid rock and in about 680ºf-4,532ºf. You will not make it through the Outer Core because it consists of liquid iron and nickel and molten magma, you would also have to go through about 3,500º-4,300º. Since you cant make it through the Outer Core you for sure wont make it through the Inner Core because you cant make it through the Outer Core and you would have to go through solid iron and nickel, plus you would have to go through 10,000ºf.

  7. Samuel says:

I think once you got close enough to Earth’s mantle the rock would be would be very hot and at that point in limbo between melting and not melting, so it would be like drilling through a putty of sorts, which would dull your drill bit significantly.

Furthermore, when you reach the mantle, the heat would be extreme enough to melt the apparatus you were using to drill with. Which would throw away millions of dollars in funding and would be bad overall.

Also if you were trying to drill with a boring machine( I think that’s what they’re called ) the tunnel would look like a snake, curving and twisting to the point where trying to reach the point where you left off would be near impossible.

So trying to drill to the center of the Earth would be inadvisable

  8. Jestin Ray Lord says:

If you tried to dig to the other side of the planet you would have a lot of problems trying to. First there would be a lot of rough terrain and the drill or whatever you are digging with would break. Second if you passed the first there would be a lot of heat near the center of earth and you would be really hot. Third if you drilled through the equator the world has a chance of exploding.
I heard that the world would explode from a documentary once.

    • Jestin says:

I claim that you can’t dig to the other side of the earth because you would melt. My evidence is the mantle is completely made of rock and the outer core is a liquid layer that is up to 4,300°F and you will melt, the inner core is solid and is 10,000°F.

  9. Amadeo says:

You wouldn’t be able to dig through the center of the earth because once you’re a couple dozen miles down you’d reach the mantle. Once you reach the mantle the magma would flow back to where you were digging. Also you’d get magma in your machinery which would cause your drill (because a drill would be the best choice) to partially melt and stop working. If you just tried to do it with a shovel you’d die of old age before you got through a significant amount of the earth’s crust.

    • amadeo says:

I claim that you can’t dig through the entire earth because the extreme pressure would crush your machinery, and the heat would melt some of your machinery. My evidence is that down there you can have over 3000 miles of pressure on top of you. Also temperatures down there can reach over 10000 degrees fahrenheit.

  10. Nevaeh says:

What would happen if you tried to dig a hole to the other side of the Earth? Good question, in my theory it wouldn’t be successful in my mind because the earth in basically a sphere. We are in Minnesota and on the other side of the world is Russia and Asia which are vast areas now if you look at it the earth is a large solid mainly with gases and liquids now liquids take up 71% of earth’s surface and 97% of the is ocean now if you’re digging to the other side you would most likely have a run in with water while you’re at it but in the center of the earth it is a large hard mass of solid metal and other hard substance in it which has been there for millions of the years now that the be an very hard substance to dig through in my mind that is a ton of digging to do just to get to the other side of the world. I’m going to stick with getting a plane ticket and use that instead of having a run in with metal and failed to dig through a solid substance.

    • Nevaeh says:

I claim that you wouldn’t have any success with this now so good luck, now if you look at it the earth is a large solid mainly with gases and 4 layers which are the Crust which is made of rock and brittle which would damage your huge very necessary drill, then say you get past that layer you will have a run in with the Mantle which is a thick layer of hard rock substance which can reach from 680oF-4532oF which is about 1800 miles thick and if you can pass that congrats but then you head on to the next layer.Which is the Outer Core which is is a interesting layer of the earth now it’s special because it is liquid iron/nickel now i find this interesting because it’s so come packed with thousand pounds of dirt! Then we have the inner layer of solid iron and nickel which is the hottest part of the earth if you were to go down there you would be singing “we’re having a heat wave a tropical heat wave” which reaches 10,000oF in the center of the earth now this hard substance in it which has been there for millions of the years, now that the be an very hard substance to dig through in my mind that is a ton of digging to do just to get to the other side of the world. I’m going to stick with getting a plane ticket and use that instead of having a run in with metal which is about 10,000 degrees fahrenheit which you would melt and break and fail to dig through a solid substance.

Digging a hole to the other side of the Earth would be almost impossible because the center of the Earth is very hot and even if you manage to get a bodysuit or some kind of protective gear it would take a lot of hard work I mean like A lot of hard work especially for one person. Maybe if you had a group of people who understood what they are suppose to do and they also have protective gear than maybe your chances of surviving are a lot higher than before. Also you’d have to plan it out very well like how many shovels will you need or if your even going to use shovels or where are you going to end up after you finish digging the hole because you don’t want to end up in the ocean.

    • Raven says:

I claim that it is impossible for you to dig a hole to the other side of the Earth without dying. The Evidence I have to support my claim is that it would take a lot of hard work to get to the inner core approximately 4,015 miles to get to the inner core but you also have to know that the further you go the hotter the temperature gets. Which is 680°F in the Mantle to as high as 10,000°F in the inner core. And if you still believe that you can dig a hole to the other side of the earth then you should probably think about the work to dig through the varies material that each layer is composed of like the Mantle’s hard rock under crust or the Outer Core’s liquid iron and nickel and molten magma or the Inner Core’s solid iron and nickel. So in conclusion it is impossible to dig a hole to the other side of the earth without dying.

  12. Alec says:

What I believe what would happen is many natural disasters will happen. For instance things like earthquakes, maybe some volcanoes will erupt, some others etc. My second idea would be the earth’s core will gain some oxygen and turn into a big burst engulfing the planet.

    • alec says:

I claim that if you tried to dig to through to the other side of the earth what would happen is you and your tools would burn up. My evidence is that there is a magma chamber on the outer core which can reach temperatures of 3,500oF to 4,300oF. The inner core’s temperature can reach 10,000oF and is made of iron nickel and crystals.

  13. Isabelle says:

    Isabelle
I honestly don’t know what would happen if you tried digging a hole to the other side of the earth. It would take forever because the world is big and you would have to dig a lot, and probably dig down and even that would take a long time. But nobody really knows what would happen because nobody has tried it. But you probably wouldn’t know where you would end up when you reach to the top.

  14. kylie says:

I think the earth would split in half because first I would dig through the dirt. Then I would dig through harder soil called rocks. Then I would get to the hot core.In the hot core you would burn.

    • Kylie says:

I claim that if I tried to dig a hole to the other side of earth I would melt like ice cream. My evidence is that the core of earth is 10,000of so I would melt like ice cream. The outer core is made of Iron liquid and crystals 3500o-4300of.

  15. Alex says:

Good question well first of all you would die of old age before you even got 1/100 of the way through and even then you would have to start when you were basically first born. You also could not use just a shovel you would need a lot of heavy powered machinery. Also if just if you get deep enough that you find lava you will have to quit because if you try to go through it you will be lucky if you make it in 2 inches.

  16. Caitlynn says:

If i digged to the other side of the world i would probably die because of the main 4 layer of the earth. Scientists believe that the middle of earth is lava so you would burn or die from heat exhaustion if you go directly through the earth. Now if i went in at a curve i necessarily would make it i just need enough oxygen to breath.
So how would you design your tunel around the world so you would live?

    • caitlynn says:

      Caitlynn
I claimed that if you dig to the other side of the earth you would die and without precautions. my evidence is there is not four layers of the earth and you would die. the crust is not your main problem. your problem is hitting the mantle. the reason why this is your problem is hitting mantle which gets up to 680 Fahrenheit to 4630 Fahrenheit this is hotter than your oven or stove. that layer of Rock is 1800 miles long that would melt you or burn you. in order to survive you would have to stay in the crust of the earth and get supplies such as food water support beams so you don’t get crush by the weight and something to dig with.

  17. cody v. says:

I’ll encounter a underground pokemon and catch it. As far as going to the other side of earth,I’ll get through with a drill.

  18. Mason says:

I would have dirt falling on my head because I would have no place to put it while mining. Something else that would happen would be that I will not make it to the other side becouse the earth is big. I think it will be weird because gravity will be funkier the farther you go.

    • Mason says:

My claim is if you use a drill or laser to get to the bottom of earth you will not make it because your machine will melt and burn up. My evidence is the second layer is the mantle and it’s over 680 degrees F and that’s over the melting point, and if you’re lucky and you make it past the mantle layer you got two more layers to go though and they are the outer core and the inner core and they are 3500-10,000 F and that is inpassible with todays technology.

  19. matt says:

I think if you would try to dig to the other side of the earth you would burn from the magma before you made it even half way. Also it would take a very long time because to go all the way through the earth would be thousands of miles. You would also need a machine capable of withstanding the heat and you would need a lot of gas to be able to power the machine.

  20. Carlos says:

If I were to try and dig a hole to the other side of the Earth I would most likely get too tired or hungry to get all the way. Also, I am pretty sure if I were to try and dig a hole to the other side of the world I wouldn’t make it because of magma that would burn me. And the drill or whatever I would be using to dig the hole probably won’t be able to make it. And wouldn’t I be using need some sort of fuel so I would have to get some and it takes a long time to get up and back down to where ever I ended?

  21. Caden says:

If you had good equipment and dug down into the Earth’s Crust and get even three fourths of the way through the crust you would experience extreme heat. Then even if you used a heat resistant drill if you got under the crust it would eventually melt. The Crust is also the thinnest part of Earth so it would take a very long time to get to the center.

    • Caden says:

I claim digging equipment will melt under the Crust. My evidence is that the Mantle has a Temp of 680-4300F and the Outer Core is 3500-4300F.

  22. Sarah says:

At some point you would end up getting overheated or you would be far enough to the point it was too hot and you would have to leave. If you did really dig to the point of magma or the core you would die unless they had made a machine that could stand that temperature. It would also depend on the tools you were using, if you have just a shovel there’s no way you could. Also if you dug through the core the world might end up getting destroyed or something like that.

  23. Michael says:

It will be ace but I might die from lava and stuff with heat. It will probably stop you from digging to the other side of the earth. But it’ll be cool if we did though probably discover new insects or something like that. Plus it will take forever and you need some other people with you to dig.
Plus we might end up in the ocean and could drown or blow up the earth by going to the center of the earth’s core.

  24. Saze says:

I think if you were make an attempt to dig into the earth, I believe you could only reach a certain amount of layers before you run out of food and oxygen, or the possibility of hitting a layer of lava and burning to death. If you were to actually try you would most likely fail and die. In conclusion, the earth is filled with hot layers and in my beliefs, the farther you go in the earth, the most likely, it will get hotter.

  25. Veronica says:

You couldn’t possibly dig all the way through the Earth, you would need to have very expensive tools to dig very far. You could possibly get through a few layers with the correct tools. But you would get stopped by a layer of the earth that is hot and hard to go through, your tools would get wrecked, making it nearly impossible to get all the way through the earth.

    • Veronica says:

I claim that you can not get all the way through the earth, your tools wouldn’t be able to dig very far, it would get dull because the heat and rock would deform it. Even if you had advanced technology and tools and were able to get farther down your tools and body would not be able to withstand the heat.
My evidence is the deeper you go the hotter it gets such as the mantle can be up to four thousand five hundred and thirty-two degrees fahrenheit, the outer core contains magma that can be four thousand three hundred degrees fahrenheit, and the distance would be to much for your body to handle do to the high pressure the center of the earth has.

  26. cody says:

I’ll encounter a underground pokemon and catch it. As far as going to the other side of earth, I’ll get through with a drill. The drill may have problems if it encounters a rock jam or once I find magma, which is in the center of the earth.

  27. Vera says:

Well first of all it’s physically impossible to dig to inside of the earth. You would most likely die trying. My guess is the you would suffocate if you got far enough. Plus we don’t have the technology to get down there, even if we did and you got down there it’s a magma ball basically as I believe so you would die either way if you were down there. It’s too hot for human skin, I imagine it would kill you right away too.

    • Vera says:

I still claim that its physically impossible to dig to the inside of the earth. Its way to hot. Just the crust is hot,the farther you go the hotter it gets. Then the mantel is 680 degrees fahrenheit to 4,538. You wouldn’t even make it that far without dying. Then the outer core is 3500-4300 degrees, then the inner core is 10,000. So yeah thats so hot that it would kill you instantly.

  28. Hailey says:

If I tried to dig into the center of the Earth, I think that I wouldn’t survive because after digging through the earth, I may not have enough oxygen to breathe and I could starve to death if I didn’t bring enough food and water. If I did happen to reach the core I would burn because the Earth’s core consists of fiery, hot, magma, which would burn right through me, and any protective gear I would have on or ride in. Therefore If I dug into the center of the earth I would incinerate.

    • Hailey says:

I claim that if you tried to dig a hole right through the center of the earth you wouldn’t survive, because after going about 1-35 miles into crust, the heat could become very detrimental to you, your health, and whatever equipment that you’d be using would start melting. If you do happen to pass through the crust, which is very, very, unlikely, you would reach the mantle, wheres its 680 to 4532 degrees Fahrenheit, after reaching the mantle it would take an extremely long time to even reach the outer core, because the mantle is about 1,800 miles thick. Also if you didn’t bring enough food and water you’d eventually starve to death, or you’d run out of oxygen because usually the further you go down the less oxygen you’d have. So even if you did pass through the outer core which is 3500-4300 degrees Fahrenheit you would die, same goes for the inner core which is 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit. In conclusion, it’s physically impossible to go through the center of the earth.

  29. Isaac says:

I think I would die, because after you dig past the earths crust you would hit the mantle. The mantle has magma in that layer so if would fill up your hole and you would get burned alive. Also I think my shovel would break before I would get past the earths crust, but If I used a big metal machine it has a melting point and after a little bit in the mantel it would melt and it would not work anymore. Also your hole might get caved in with dirt by an earth quake or something happening above you, and you would get buried alive, so R.I.P..

    • Isaac says:

I claim that I cannot make it to the center of the earth and I would die to try, my evidence is that the mantel temperature ranges from 680-4532 degrees, and no one could live with that amount of heat, so in conclusion, you could not make it to the center of the earth

  30. Sarah says:

At some point you would end up getting overheated or you would be far enough too the point it was too hot and you would have to leave. If you did really dig to the point of magma or the core you would die unless they had made a machine that could stand that temperature. It would also depend on the tools you were using, if you have just a shovel there’s no way you could. Also if you dug through the core the world might end up getting destroyed or something like that.

  31. Destiny says:

If you tried to dig a hole to the other side of the world, I believe you would die of heat. I do not think it is possible.

  32. Kaylene says:

What would happen if you tried to dig a hole to the other side of the Earth? I think if you were to try to dig to the other side of the world you wouldn’t be successful because the earth is round and you would get lost or stuck at some point. Also the center of the Earth is very hot. It would take a really long time.

  33. Duran says:

You cannot dig a hole to the other side of the Earth, plus even if you could, it would take a really long time. It is impossible because you would not be able to survive the extreme heats when you go closer to the Earth’s core, because the deeper you get, the more that the temperature would rise. The Earth has so many different layers to enter and exit. I think that it would not be possible with current technology to create a special suit and some protective gear to keep you protected from the high temperatures that are within the planet. Even if you did somehow make it through, you would end up in the Indian Ocean, and it would probably be too much pressure for you to survive once you reach the other side of the Earth. The drill you would have to use would also have to keep you safe from the water pressure.

    • Duran says:

I claim that you can only go down into the Earth a certain distance before dying from starvation and thirst and the very high temperatures. My evidence is that it will be a very long trip and you will eventually run out of food since the trip from the surface to the core is about 4,000 miles. The hottest temperature on the way down there is in the inner core where it will be about as hot as the surface of the sun, as high as 10,000ºF, and that is physically impossible to survive. You will not make it there anyway since you will burn up somewhere in the mantle, because the temperature gets as high as 4,532ºF in there.

  34. ryan says:

I think dirt would fall on me and I would suffocate. I think i would find lava and melt.
I think i would die of starvation or dehydration.

  35. Kendra says:

I Think the world would fill with lava, with a drill that would dig into the earth. The drill would most likely break or burn in lava.I would probably die either from lava, oxygen loss or the earth caving in.

  36. Pamela says:

If you were to dig to the opposite side of the earth it would be impracticable. It would be impracticable because of the deeper you go the hotter it would become. You would have to get a machine that is lava proof and that would not become hot on the inside when you are inside it. You would melt either way because it is so hot towards the center of the earth. Just recently I watched a movie about going to the center of the earth. The movie is called “Journey To the Center Of the Earth”. It is a great movie, you should really see the movie. This blog is cool.

    • Pam says:

I claim that you would burn from heat when you barely reach the Mantle. My evidence is the temperature varies in the Crust but it gets hotter the further you dig. The Mantle temperature ranges from 680F to 4532F.

  37. Dante says:

If you try to dig a hole throuh the earth it would be litterally imposible because ther is a limit to were you can dig and get tired. You have to make it through the earts crust and then you have to dig through alot of rocks. If you do make to the center of the earth you wouldnt be able to get through the magma and the molten rock and die.

    • Dante says:

I claim that as you get closer to the inner core you will burn up. My evidence is that the mantle is 680°F-4,552°F. The outer core is 3,500°F-4,300°F. The inner core 10,000°F that would be impossible to survive.

  38. Carlos says:

I claim that you will die before getting past the inner core. My evidence is that the mantle can be as high as 4,532ºF. Also if you somehow get past the mantle, the outer core can be up to 4,300ºF with magma.

  39. Saze says:

I claim if you attempted to dig into the earth, the farther you go, the hotter it will be. I do believe if you attempt it, you will possibly melt to death. My evidence is if you were to actually make it to the mantle, the temperature would be 680ºf. If you were to make it past the temperature, the outer core temperature will be between 3,500ºf- 4,300ºf.

  40. cody says:

The heat will be 10,000 degrees. Therefore it’s impossible to reach the center of the earth.

  41. Sarah says:

My claim is that it would be to hot for a human to withstand as they dug. After the first Crust and into the Mantle the temperatures can range from 608 to 4532 degrees fahrenheit. We could handle it if we had machines or tools that could make it through those temperatures. Another thing that could happen if we did have the machine to reach the center is the pressure on the inner core. It could be to much for us to handle. So in summary we couldn’t handle it unless we had a machine that could make it through.

  42. Makya says:

I claim that you will die due to heat and pressure,My evidence is the crust gets hotter on the way down if you are able to survive the heat you would of pressure because the mantle can be 680oF -4532oF and the rocks are still solid due to pressure.

  43. Kendra says:

I claim that it is not possible to dig to the other side of the earth because it is to hot for humans to survive in. The temperature in the mantle is 680-to-4537 degrees F. If you make it to the otter core you will most likely die from magma. 🙂

    anyways bye!

  44. michael says:

My evidence is the heat down the center of the earth could die of the magma down in the earth of serious burns because magma is like 1000-2400 fahrenheit. Plus the tools can break down there. Plus you gonna run outta food down there. I claim my evidnce is you gonna die from magma thats like 2400 fahrenheit and your food gonna run out.

  45. matt says:

I claim that if you tried to dig through the earth you would die from heat. My evidence is that it gets up to 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Also when you get to the outer core you would hit magma.

  46. neal says:

I claim that if try to dig to the other side of the earth you will hit magma and you may die. Your drill will melt and you may die because the heat is 10000o f . The pressure might kill you in your machine you may even get stuck in place and my get crushed from the pressure.

  47. Emily Christenson says:

I claim that even if you get past the crust and into the mantle the heat will affect you by melting you or your machinery or both. The evidence I have to support claim is the mantle is between 680oF- 4,532oF. In the crust the further down you dig the hotter it gets. The mantle is dense thick solid rock.

  48. alex says:

I claim that your equipment would all melt. It would melt because it can get up to 10000 degrees fahrenheit on the inner core and up to 600 degrees in the mantle thats hotter than your stove.my evidence is that steels melting point is 2500 degrees fahrenheit. So that means that the wires would start to melt right when you got to the mantle and if you made it out alive your equipment would be rekt. So in conclusion don’t try this (ever and i mean ever)

  49. Saze says:
